Suggestions for a Perfect Session

Children

Children's Portraits
Making the appointment -

*Choose the best time of day for your child... a well rested and happy child is a much better subject

*Babies usually photograph best in the morning, please keep this in mind

*The best photographs of newborns/babies are often taken with the father and/or mother (check out Colleen's Portfolio).

*When choosing the location, please keep in mind the comfort of your child. The more comfortable your child is, the better photographs we can get. Also try to chose a location where your child will have fun, that way we can get lots of natural photographs of your child smiling.

Prior to the appointment -

*Please do not prep your child before the session. By encouraging them to practice smiling and posing, you could actually build anxiety in your child, making it more difficult to capture your child with a natural expression. We want to photograph your child being themselves, acting naturally, doing what they do best!

Clothing -

*You should dress your child in clothing that fits comfortably sitting, standing, and laying down.

*Try to stay with outfits that are fairly plain and simple. You want to have outfits that don't take the attraction away from your child. Solid colors, whether they are dark or light, with minimal designs are great.

*Try not to bring too many changes of clothes. Children and babies will then get irritable and they may not want to cooperate with the rest of the session.

What to have readily accessible during the appointment -

*Any special items, a favorite blanket, special toys, gifts from grandma & grandpa, etc.

*An extra bottle or pacifier. If we need to take a break for the baby, we certainly will.

*Any toys or items that will calm your child down if they get fussy, such as a bouncy seat or a rattle.

Teens and Adults

Clothing -

*First and foremost, Colleen would like to capture your personality in her images, so be sure to wear clothes that you will feel most comfortable wearing. If you often enojoy wearing solid colors with minimal designs, that is the best style to wear. If you often enjoy wearing very busy and unique clothing, then wear that type of clothing. Just keep in mind as your chosing what to wear that you want to have outfits that don't take the attraction away from you. We want to the sole focus of the session to be focused on you and who you are.

Make Up -

*FOUNDATION - Find a color that matches your skin tone close enough to cover any imperfections. You don’t want to look “made up”, you want to look beautiful and natural. We recommend using a powder based foundation to avoid facial shine on your photographs.

*CONCEALER - Apply concealer to mask dark circles and under-eye imperfections. To apply concealer correctly, pat on three dots of concealer and blend lightly with fingertip or makeup sponge, avoid rubbing. Concealer may also be applied to any other imperfections of blemishes on your face.

*LIPS - Apply lip primer to enhance fullness, fill in lines, minimize fine lines, and eliminate lip color bleeding. If having indoor photos taken, apply a slightly darker tone than you normally wear to counteract the bright lights that will be used in your photo session; however, keep in mind that very deep, dark colors will make lips appear smaller then they are.

*EYES - Avoid white above or below the eyes, it does not photograph well at all. If having indoor photos taken, apply a slightly darker tone than you normally wear to counteract the bright lights that will be used in your photo session. Please keep in mind when applying make up for your session that too much color above or below the eyes actually detract from the eyes rather than attract.

*PLEASE NOTE - wear your make-up as heavy as you normally do for a night out, no heavier. The photographs will show how much you put on, so the more you have on, the more it will show in your photographs. If you typically do not wear make-up, you may want to put some on. The flash lighting can cause your face to look washed out in the photographs even if it doesn't look washed out normally.

What to have readily accessible during the appointment -

*Anything that you feel is a part of you...snowboards, skis, instruments, awards, etc. We want to create unique portraits of you both by yourself and with the things that make you, you.
